Cross-Cultural Reporting

Many jobs require cross-cultural training, but perhaps none more so than journalists. Whether it’s encountering a different religious sect in their own state or traveling overseas to cover a war, a journalist has to quickly understand how to communicate and work with people from all types of background - ON DEADLINE.

Learn from former KXAN political reporter and Anchor, Jenny Hoff, how a journalist self-trains to deal with cultural boundaries and the mistakes and successes that come from learning on the job.

From traveling to Afghanistan to dealing with Washington antics to spending three months on a polygamist compound in West Texas,
Jenny will talk about the struggles that come with understanding cultures that are often under fire from a many people in society as well as the lessons all journalists should learn before venturing into the field.

Join us for a multimedia experience with video and pictures as well as plenty of time for questions as Jenny shares the secrets of successful reporting and the kind of mistakes that can lead to important stories being left untold when the understanding of other cultures is absent.

The Future of Interculturalism:
How the world is changing and what interculturalists need to think about and do to remain relevant and proactive

A guided dialogue with intercultural “tweaker”, Jeremy Solomons

When: Wednesday, April 7th, 2010, 11.30 am - 1.30 pm
Where: Peony’s Restaurant, Meeting Room

The Cold War and the Axis of Evil are making way for a more complex and dispersed Global War on Terror; China’s Market Socialism is now challenging a new form of Managed Capitalism; and a young, Blackberry junkie of humble, mixed-race origins is the most powerful yet misunderstood leader in the world.

With all of these and other global cross-currents, it would seem to be a good time to reconsider what it means to be an interculturalist and how to remain relevant and proactive in a rapidly changing world.

Jeremy Solomons will lead an open, no-holds-barred dialogue on the past, present and future of interculturalism, focusing on the three main challenges and the three top opportunities that lie ahead for interculturalists.

Jerusalem is Proud to Present
(80 minute documentary)
Monday November 24, 2008
at 6:00pm

We will have a short overview of the Global Conference and start the movie about 6:30pm In the summer of 2006, Jerusalem was to host, for the first time in history, the World Pride events, which were to culminate in a traditional gay pride parade for the first time in the city’s history. This hair –raising documentary captures the homophobic hate campaign launched by fundamentalist religious groups. The planned events stirred turmoil in the politically complex city, with Jewish, Muslim, and Christian religious leaders banding together in a an uncompromising battle against what they say would “defile the holy city.” On the other side stood the activists of the Open House, Jerusalem’s LGBT community center, who planned the events. Steadfast in the face of the heated and violent anti-gay sentiment, they had to deal with threats to much more than just their right to march.

Awards: The CMCA “Mediterranean Challenges” Grand Prize; Best Documentary at BAFF World Television Film Festival; Movies that Matter Human Rights Award IDFA; a Silver Hugo (Chicago); Best Out Standing Documentary at Outfest, USA; audience award for favorite documentary and honorable mention from the jury for excellence in documentary filmmaking at the Seattle LGBT Film Festival, USA.

This film was part of the film festival at the SIETAR Global Conference in Granada, Spain this past October.
